Terra sig

I’m finally getting around to creating some finishes for the few clay works I’ve been able to mold this summer. I’m starting with a couple terra sigs. In my experience, terra sigs aren’t used by potters and ceramic artists very much at this point in history, but they give my sculptures the finish I’m looking for right now with an electric kiln.

I’m working on a terra sig from Gold Art today; later in the week I hope to do the same with a XX Sagger. From what I understand these should give me white sigs. I’m going to try adding some cobalt carbonate and iron oxide for color.

About pcNielsen
Paul Nielsen founded The Aesthetic Elevator late in 2005. He owns a piece of paper, located somewhere in his house (not on the wall), stating that he earned a B.F.A. from the University of Nebraska around about 2001. While there, he studied studied architecture, graphic design and ceramics, graduating with a degree in studio art. Paul presently serves as communications manager for a small non-profit doing their print design and marketing. He spends as much time sculpting in his studio as possible — which is not nearly enough.
